But now, by saying what his future was going to be like, he had created it. A plan is a real thing, and things projected are experienced. A plan once made and visualized becomes a reality along with other realities.


He had lost one world and had not gained another. And Kino was afraid. Never in his life had he been far from home. He was afraid of strangers and of strange places. He was terrified of that monster of strangeness they called the capital.


But Kino had lost his old world and he must clamber on to a new one. For his dream of the future was real and never to be destroyed, and he had said "I will go", and that made a real thing too. To determine to go and to say it was to be halfway there.

La Perla

For it is said that humans are never satisfied, that you give them one thing and they want something more. And this is said in disparagement, whereas it is one of the greatest talents the species has and one that has made it superior to animals that are satisfied with what they have.

Terminé de leer The Pearl de John Steinbeck. Hacía tiempo que no retomaba los clásicos de la literatura norteamericana. Desde que leí Of mice and man, Steinbeck se volvió de mis autores favoritos. La claridad y brevedad de su prosa construye sentimientos y ambientes más que acciones. Sus relatos describen los cambios más sutiles del interior psicoemocional humano. Los valores tienen un sentido real, existente, posible en sus narraciones. Las lecciones humanas de su literatura perduran en nuestra memoria por su capacidad para crear metáforas entre la naturaleza y el hombre. El ritmo de su prosa es una melodía literaria, es casi como oír a una madre contando cuentos antes de dormir a sus pequeños.

Las obras de Steinbeck son un cuestionamieto constante de nuestra forma de vida. La perla no es la excepción, aunque basado en un cuento mexicano, Steinbeck logra enunciar cada acto con su singular descripción aguda. Juana y Kino son dos mexicanos pobres que tienen un hijo llamado Coyotito. Un día un alacrán pica a Coyotito, acuden al doctor pero como no tienen con qué pagarle, el doctor se niega a atenderlos. Kino busca en el mar una perla para cubrir los gastos médicos. Encuentra la perla del mundo, tan grande como los huevos de una gaviota. Con ella imagina una vida mejor: casarse con Juana por la Iglesia, un rifle, educación para coyotito.

La avaricia de todo el pueblo pondrá su sueño en la perla. Los compradores de perla le dirán a Kino que el valor de la perla es ínfimo, que nadie le pagaría nada, que acepte mil pesos. Él no acepta, confía en que vale mucho más e irá a la ciudad a averiguarlo. Una noche antes de partir a la ciudad, su casa sufre un ataque, Kino mata a un hombre y tienen que huir. Los persiguen.

Juana sabe que es el final, que la perla los ha condenado, que lo mejor era haberla regresa al mar junto con su maldición. Kino se resistió a escuchar a Juana y al final, el tiempo se divide entre antes de la perla y después de la perla. La perla del mundo les cambió la vida.

La codicia nubla el pensamiento y hasta el hombre más tranquilo se convierte en un asesino, se torna frío, inhumano. El sistema donde Kino es pobre y el resto de los hombres son ricos (al menos más que él) parece invencible en este relato. Tal vez como lo mencionan algunas líneas del libro, puede cambiarse el destino de un ser humano, pero no con un golpe de suerte porque eso siempre termina mal.

Un libro que nos permite reflexionar sobre la libertad humana y la fuerza de los sistemas sociales.

It is not good to want a thing too much. It sometimes drives the luck away.

Every man suddenly became related to Kino's pearl, and Kino's pearl went into the dreams, the speculations, the schemes, the plans, the futures, the wishes, the needs, the lusts, the hungers, of everyone, and only one person stood in the way and that was Kino, so that he became curiosly every man's enemy.
